Shipping Containers | Manchester

Conversion and re-use of shipping containers for alternative uses seems to be on the rise. They can be altered, assembled, clad and painted in creative ways and provide spaces for food & drink operators, retail spaces, offices, workspaces or studios. In some locations, they have even been used for housing. They can provide temporary ‘meanwhile uses’ pending future redevelopment, or can be more permanent features.

Shipping containers: an opportunity to transform

This use of shipping containers to create modular spaces that can house a range of different uses is something we are currently exploring on a number of our development sites. In particular, we are looking at the opportunity that may be presented by a surface car parking area we have close by the Cornbrook tram stop, on the edge of Manchester City Centre. This location is growing rapidly, but currently, this is mainly through residential development. We want to explore the ability to use converted shipping containers here to provide affordable and interesting space that will attract interesting and imaginative uses which will in turn help to develop an interesting, vibrant and attractive neighbourhood and the local community.

We want to create spaces and places that can attract uses that have the potential to transform the neighbourhood. These could be established ventures or start-ups, creative or community uses, or it could be something we haven’t even thought of yet.

Shipping containers: an opportunity to collaborate

As Manchester property developers, our goal is not only to create great buildings and spaces for those that occupy them, but that also contribute as much as possible to revitalising the areas around them. We want to do this by collaborating, working in a positive way with others, and in particular the local community. We therefore really want to talk to people who may have a passion, a business or an idea which could utilise these types of spaces and who would want to work with us to help transform this area.
